At least 64 Killed in Rio's Largest Security Action on Gangs
At least 64 people died in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 people were detained.
Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.
The United Nations human rights body said it was "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements near Rio's airport is seen as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.
Government representatives stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Many residents were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
