Chicago's MLB Team Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Contract.
In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract for the high-profile player.
Financial Terms and Incentives
The deal includes a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with annual pay of sixteen million for the next season and $17M for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for being named the MVP award.
- $500K for placing second or third in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for ranking in the top ten.
- Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.
His deal includes that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his permission and makes him a free agent at the end of the deal. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
Posting Fee and Franchise History
As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club are also entitled to a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to represent the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 in February, bolsters a young core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a last-place season, placing last in the division but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, surpassing the single-season record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was shortened to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Despite recording 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing mainly at first base, he has more recently played to third base.

Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The following day in the title match against the USA, he slugged a tying shot in the early innings, helping Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.
