Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new acronym emerged several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts such as child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to attend to a child who has lost their whole family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what unity manifests as.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that once promoted harmony has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
