False Claims Online Damaged Brigitte Macron's Well-being, Child Tells Court
The French first lady's daughter, Tiphaine Auzière, informed a tribunal in Paris that misleading allegations spread through social media—including the groundless claim that she had a male birth identity—have significantly harmed her mother's quality of life.
She, a 41-year-old lawyer, appeared as a testifier in the legal proceedings of 10 individuals accused of internet-based abuse against her mother.
Effects on Everyday Activities
Auzière stated that her mother now feels perpetual anxiety about her demeanor, including her attire to the way she carries herself, due to the concern that any image may be manipulated to advance hateful attacks.
"The outcome is that she systematically needs to be careful to her outfits, how she holds herself, no matter what her activities in everyday routine," Auzière testified.
Defendants and Accusations
Ten individuals, in that age range, are in court for internet-based bullying. Some had a small social media following, while others were more visible.
Every defendant is accused of spreading defamatory content about the first lady's identity. For some, this involved comparing the disparity in years with her husband to offensive labels.
If found responsible, they may be sentenced to as much as 24 months in prison.
Consequences for Loved Ones
She, one of three children from her mother's first marriage, explained how the inaccurate allegations have resulted in a "decline of her physical state" and a "decline of her quality of life".
She testified, "Not a day goes by when someone fails to mention this to her."
Auzière highlighted the effects on loved ones, including her grandchildren hearing hurtful comments like "Your grandmother is not truthful" or "Your grandmother was born male".
"She is unsure what to do about it," she testified. "She's not elected, she has not sought public attention, and she is constantly facing this abuse."
Legal Battle History
This case is the latest phase in a broader legal battle addressing the baseless theory that she was a man.
The couple have pursued a case in America alleging slander involving a political commentator who amplified the claim.
The legal filing asserts that the claim is totally unfounded and identifies that the person cited is actually her older brother.
Trial Testimonies
During the trial, a few individuals rejected the accusations.
- A retired business owner, now a deputy mayor, claimed he "had no purpose to inflict damage" and referred to his social media content as satirical.
- Another defendant stated that his posts were presented as "satire" and voiced worry that the case could endanger "the right to speak freely".
- A third defendant explained he shared content since he thought it was an international matter with "implications for the country".
Personal History
The inaccurate claim about Brigitte Macron's identity gained traction partly because their union has often been a point of interest on the internet.
She, being significantly older than the president, originally knew the future president when working as a teacher at his school.
The connection between them grew through theatrical projects, and they entered into marriage in that year, after Brigitte Macron's marriage dissolution.
Auzière finished her statement by saying that the baseless rumors have caused a "storm that does not cease" for Brigitte Macron.
