Hamilton Island, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
