Kalimuendo Scores as Forest Claim Nostalgic Win Over Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed around the City Ground as Forest supporters reveled in another win against their Swedish opponents. Much has occurred since Francis's winning header clinched the European Cup back in the year 1979, but Forest continue to cherish those glorious moments. Similarly, major changes have taken place in the five weeks since the manager took charge, with the team appearing reinvigorated and earning a convincing win courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of advancing in the European competition.

Building Steam with Another Straight Win

For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for nearly a month after finishing sixth in their home competition – represented a third consecutive win across every tournament and added to the positive energy gained from the previous week's stunning victory at Anfield. While this match was a reminder of the club's historic success in spirit, the encounter itself was free of any significant tension or nerves.

It proved to be an occasion dripping in sentiment, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third meeting between the sides since the showpiece event over four decades past.

Forest leaned into the history, paying tribute to the legends of 1979 by giving them, along with their visiting counterparts, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's team from that time were additionally present. Both teams shared a dinner together prior to the kick-off. Forest legends and their teammates received a tumultuous welcome when they assembled on the field 15 minutes before kick-off, and a typically impressive tifo was shown in the Trent End.

Recalling History

“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed one part of a giant banner, in block capitals. While no one needed reminding of what ensued, the rest was revealed as the squads emerged from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. A second brilliant display showed Clough observing events beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Outset

So, the hosts had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the evening? It was pretty good, as well. They were in complete control from the moment the forward whistled an effort off target inside two minutes and established a 2-0 lead by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who came to Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defence led by their own academy product captain, Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the pathway of Yates, who swept home right-footed from just inside the penalty area to score his maiden strike since last March.

Second Strike Seals Control

Yates was implicated in Forest’s next goal on the verge of the interval, too, his free header saved by Malmö’s goalkeeper Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to tap in the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the playmaker given a rare start and just his second outing since September, was the spark, lofting a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.

A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was deflected aside off Malmö defender Rösler, the son of ex- Manchester City forward Uwe, and an unmarked Milenkovic had earlier had a powerful header instinctively saved by the keeper, who returned in place of the ex- Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was Malmö’s first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal the home team's energy. Forest made it 3-0 when the defender scored after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a set-piece. The captain had a shot blocked, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.

Forest then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort off target from distance. It was one of those nights. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made multiple alterations from the team that stunned the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they additionally scored three goals, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs midway through the second half.

Hiccup-Free Night for the Team

It turned out to be a hiccup-free evening for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could take off the defender with the match long since sewn up and later brought on teenage full-back Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard supplying “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are able of producing of thrills, as well.
