The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory against Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
The champion entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.
Play-Off Climax
This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” said the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Other Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
