The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
