The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a official senior international match.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.

After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Manchester.
